The
Green Side of Housewares
“Green is more important now,” says
Bulkley, who is targeting stores that cater
to an environmentally aware clientele in
the 20- to 30-year-old age range. “Our
target buyer is a younger, eco-conscious
consumer.”
Bio Chef introduced about 20 SKUs of
utensils along with some bowls, colanders
and storage items. The handles on the
utensils are made from a 70 percent
cornstarch/30 percent plastic blend that is
recyclable, he says. Using cornstarch as a
key component cuts down on the energy
used to produce the product, says Bulkley.
Another new exhibitor, Grandview Group,
showed off a line of disposable dinnerware
products made from heat-pressed fallen
leaves from the areca plant. The leaves
are collected, washed and pressed into the
shapes of plates and bowls using just heat
and pressure.
