La Mejor Cosecha showcased a
bounty of dried capsicums, beans,
spices and vegetables. Production
has been established throughout
the country so the company can
produced year-round. The range of
capsicums was breathtaking, with
rich paprika, aja panca and deep
red guajillo.
Everyone in our group fell in love
with the dried goldenberries. Gold-
enberries have been grown all over
the world, from the plant’s native
Brazil, to far-reaching areas in-
cluding Central and South Africa,
Australia, New Zealand, Europe,
California and Hawaii. There are
a variety of names for the gold-
enberry: they are labeled “cape
gooseberries” in Africa, “poha
berry” in Hawaii, and have a
number of folk names including
“ground cherry” and “husk cherry.”
Whatever you call them, these little
berries are not your average dried
fruit. Noted for the high amounts of
carotene and bioflavonoids (vitamin
P) – nutrients that, studies have
shown, produce anti-inflammatory
and antioxidant activity (among
many other benefits) – goldenberries
are also an excellent source of
vitamin A, vitamin C, and contain
a good amount of dietary fiber and
pectin. Unlike most fruits, golden-
berries also contain protein and
phosphorous.
